Arizona YIP: They’re Not Just Learning, They’re Becoming
Dear Dreamers and Dream Makers,
At our University of Arizona’s Youth Impact Program, the transformation among our young dreamers is evident. With both the boys’ and girls’ programs running side by side, the campus is buzzing with energy, growth, and inspiration.
Dennis Gray one of the biggest dream makers for the Arizona Youth Impact Program and for my sister and me, shared his reflection.
“Tucson YIP is demonstrating once again the power of collaboration as teachers from schools and the university, airmen and women from Davis-Monthan AFB, and university athletic staff and student athletes, challenge, encourage and support YIP students in classrooms and on courts and fields.
Following separate academic and athletic schedules – but together for games, meals and development of the YIP ethos – boys and girls are learning the value of true teamsmanship: how to contribute; how to help others; how to hold themselves and others accountable. The personal growth, stimulated by the adult mentors, in just three days has been remarkable!
Boys’ teams, developing their zipline projects, will be able to test their ideas at Davis-Monthan as they experience and examine a real zipline. The girls, too, with a project involving camera surveillance from balloons will get some real-world connection on their Field Trip to the Base.”
Through hands-on STEM projects—like the boys’ zipline challenge and the girls’ surveillance balloon initiative—students are discovering how classroom concepts come to life in the real world. These projects aren’t just exercises; they’re immersive experiences backed by mentorship, teamwork, and purpose.
Mentors, coaches, and university leaders are investing in more than just academic or athletic performance—they’re cultivating confidence, leadership, and character in every participant.
As we look ahead to the conclusion of this year’s program, we’re inspired by the curiosity, courage, and commitment of these students. They’re not just learning—they’re becoming.
