Aiming Higher: Hawai‘i Girls YIP Launches with Purpose

With hearts full of hope and ambition, over 70 families gathered to celebrate the kickoff of the 4th annual Girls Youth Impact Program (YIP) in Hawai‘i—a launchpad for the next generation of leaders, scholars, and changemakers. This inspiring event marked the beginning of a transformative journey for dozens of young dreamers ready to rise.

Coach Laura Beeman of the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa Wahine Basketball team joined the celebration, encouraging the girls to embrace the full experience of the program. She spoke to the importance of developing not only athletic ability, but also leadership, academic confidence, and teamwork—qualities that will shape their growth both on and off the court.

Program Director Ziggy Ramil introduced this year’s dynamic new curriculum, featuring rocket-building projects designed not only to teach STEM concepts, but also to serve as a metaphor for the girls’ potential. These rockets represent more than just hands-on learning—they symbolize the launching point of each camper’s journey toward a bright and empowered future.

The Wahine Basketball team proudly stood alongside their assigned groups, calling each girl to the stage to sign her letter of commitment. The moment marked more than just the start of camp—it was a symbolic commitment to themselves, to each other, and to their dreams.

As the ceremony concluded, excitement and pride filled the air. Each camper left knowing she is part of something extraordinary, deeply grateful for the opportunity, and ready to take flight.
