From Rice University 2009 participants:

  • This camp means a lot to me. Instead of being here I would be at home or, probably on the street selling drugs.  If I was not here I would be in a gang.  Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
2009 Rice YIP Studying (Rice Athletics)
  • I came to this program with my mind on coming just to come and play around. After the first week it changed my mind a lot because they way they taught was different.
  • My favorite highlight during this camp..was us talking to each other during life skills.  No one ever talked bad about another teammate.  We all listened to what each and everyone of us had to say. Another highlight was when a teammate couldn't finish an exercise everyone reached out and helped that teammate until he could get to the finish line.  In this camp there wasn't one person that got left behind. When we all would get in trouble we all made sure we took full responsibility.  All of us had each others' back.

  • This is a summer I'll never forget because this summer I became strong and wiser about my choices. This camp can help better ourselves for the future, but not just physically, but also mentally.

  • ...but my favorite part was life skills because we talked about avoiding drugs, gangs, alcohol and other bad influences. In my opinion, that's good because some kids don't have the opportunity to talk about those things.

  • The coaches are great to us. It feels like we are NFL players.  Going into college stadiums, I learned self esteem, (and about) peer pressure, drugs and alcohol and gangs.  They teach us about life. The first and most important thing I learned was the value of a good education.
  • I enjoyed my teachers and what they have taught me.  I learned that it takes a bigger man to walk away.  Respect is not given, you have to earn it.  Self confidence is when you believe in yourself and not anyone else.  Choices are good and some are bad.  I made a lot of bad choices in my life, but my teachers motivate me to make right choices.
